Being the multifaceted character that he is, Donald Duck has both good and bad sides. The bad sides - especially noticeable in his uncontrollable, steaming temper and his incomprehensible, catastrophic self-confidence - are predominant in Carl Barks' stories. This page will show you a handful of the different kinds of Donald's irresponsibility.

OVERESTIMATION

  WDCS035 - 1943

Synopsis:
Despite several warnings, Donald takes the nephews out into the desert where he promptly gets lost!

Comments:
Donald is irresponsible on several levels in this story which is one of the earliest in a long row where Donald overrates his own abilities. In this story he manages to get lost repeatedly, and when he finally thinks he has come home to the ranch, the nephews inform him that it is the wrong ranch!

Other examples:
As indicated, Donald's ego is often too big and makes some of his actions quite irresponsible. In WDCS132 he decides to help his nephews with their tryouts for JW merit badges despite the fact that he does not know the first thing about what he is doing, and in WDCS114 he brags of being a great skier
who will deliver desperately needed medicine to Codfish Cove on skis. Needless to say that he has never been on skis before...

THOUGHTLESSNESS

  WDCS149 - 1953

Synopsis:
Donald is making all the decisions in his life by tossing a coin. Flipism will lead the way...

Comments:
Donald behaves very irresponsibly towards his nephews in this story in which he drives them around in the countryside with little - or no - consideration for their well-being. He even manages to crash his car by blindly driving the wrong way on a one-way road!

Other examples:
In FC0062 Donald takes the nephews deep into the Everglades despite repeated warnings from locals and the inhabitants of the swamp themselves - the Gneezles. And in WDCS257 Donald is set upon filming his nephews in as embarrassing a situation as possible...

GRUDGES

  WDCS048 - 1944

Synopsis:
A quarrel about putty escalates into a major war between Donald and neighbour Jones.

Comments:
The two neighbours live in eternal strife and most of the time we are not aware what causes it and who is the instigator. But in this story we are given a little insight. It seems that this particular argument about putty started several years ago and has escalated since. This becomes apparent from scattered remarks.

Other examples:
Whenever they see each other the two combatants act as bulls in front of a matador's red muleta. Tirelessly they carry on with their grudges; they have destroyed their gardens, houses, furniture - and they are always trying very hard to also destroy each other (see more
HERE).

IGNORANCE

  WDCS201 - 1957

Synopsis:
Donald is hired to pour bug powder into Duckburg's water reservoir but by accident he pours red dye into it instead. The result is somewhat different!

Comments:
Although Donald senses that something is terribly wrong he does nothing to remedy the mistake. The disaster f
orces him to retreat to a safe haven in Africa!

Other examples:
Donald's ignorance also provoked another incident in WDCS263 when he lit a match in a dark storeroom knowing very well that it contained rockets and explosives. Again, catastrophe was imminent. Off to Africa once more...
In several stories Donald convinced himself as being a perfect handler of animals contrary to facts. In WDCS193 (a whale), WDCS218 (dolphins), and WDCS200 (a full pet service) are examples of his ignorance.

RECKLESSNESS

  WDCS156 - 1953

Synopsis:
Donald is a master rain maker but jealousy towards Gladstone in their mutual courting of Daisy muddles his mind...

Comments:
Donald is phenomenal as a rain maker, but this time he gets blinded by sheer, mind-numbing jealousy, which causes him to generate a catastrophe among picnic guests in a valley.

Other examples:
From time to time Donald has been a master at several different jobs, but they have all ended in great disasters for his surroundings and himself. For instances: His job as master wrecker in WDCS264 forced him to immigrate to Antarctica, and his job as master glasser in DD68 ended abruptly when all of Duckburg turned against him...
