Carl Barks stated in interviews that he was always very conscious not to take up typical American themes and subjects in great detail, because he knew that his readers abroad might not understand stories of that nature. For instance, it would have been fairly simple for Barks to dream up exciting stories in which his ducks were baseball players, but he always refrained from such projects. Still, his native USA has been a leading force and trendsetter for the past century, and it was unavoidable that Barks from time to time took up subjects - or showed objects - that did indeed originate from his country. In many instances, he was presumably not even aware that many of his panels contained things that were not always commonly known outside his homeland. Take the famous American hamburger as an example: Today there is hardly a place on the entire globe where this snack is not well-known, but this was by no means the case when Barks drew his stories all those years ago.
In fact, Barks' stories are scattered with typical American subjects of all imaginable kinds and this is as it should be; after all the duck universe is situated somewhere within the USAs borders!
When you browse the sub-pages you will probably find that you are familiar with most of the examples from your own country, but you should keep in mind that Barks wrote and drew his stories half a century ago. And the world has changed considerably since then...

NB.: As this is a page about American locations, inventions, nourishments, events, and objects, it is only natural that the accompanying texts are shown in American English. It is also important to notice that all panels are dealing specifically with examples from the U.S.A. and not America as a whole. And finally, you should keep in mind that the stories contain a considerable amount of additional Americanisms - here you are only presented to a selection!
