Donald Duck's three nephews have always functioned as one organism without special characteristics. In the start of the comic book stories they were also mischievous and destructive brats, but when Carl Barks started to produce his 10-pagers he slowly turned Huey, Dewey and Louie into less quarrelsome and more sharp-witted individuals who frequently accompanied their uncles, Donald and Scrooge, on numerous overseas adventures in which they often proved their worth by rescuing their uncles from all sorts of mishaps. Barks even added to the nephews' radical change of character by involving them in the world-wide humanitarian scouting movement called the Junior Woodchucks.

But this page will focus on the nephews' more bratty and thoughtless sides. Most of the examples come from the time when this was quite normal in the duck comic books. You are presented with some of the stories Barks produced along the same line - in an ascending order of 'brattiness'.

INNOCENT CHEATING
  WDCS096 'Hole-in-One - or Two' - 1948

Synopsis:
Donald forces the nephews to act as caddies at the golf court although they want to go fishing. They decide to manoeuvre Donald through the course in order to get off quickly!

Comments:
The nephews' decision is in itself relatively harmless, but it seems to suggest that the act of deception is acceptable. In WDCS077 'The Beetle Garden' and WDCS236 Froggy Farmer they went a bit further by tricking Donald into believing that he was surrounded by oversized animals.

PLAYFUL TRICKS
  WDCS127 'April Fools' - 1951

Synopsis:
The nephews are trying their best to make a sucker out of Donald on April Fools' Day but they are not very successful.

Comments:
They repeatedly play tricks on their uncle but the actions all go by unnoticed by Donald who even benefits from the pranks. At the end of the day he still has no clue that his nephews have tried to trick him.
In WDCS105 'Dubious Echoes' the nephews also tried to fool Donald - this time into believing that a certain glen had a terrific echo. But Donald saw through their charade that time.

MISUNDERSTOOD MISCHIEF
  WDCS154 'Clubhouse for Sale' - 1953

Synopsis:
Donald is the realtor for the old Quackly Place which is also a playground for the nephews. They have to prevent Donald from selling...

Comments:
They do so by physically trying to convince a potential buyer that the house is nothing but a ruin. Still, they end up with egg on their faces, because the buyer's intention was to remodel the house into a children's playground!
In WDCS196 'Snow Statues' the nephews were also on collision course with their uncle. Both parties tried to build the best snow statue for a competition in order to collect money for two needy children, but none of them were aware of the other party's intentions. So the nephews wrecked Donald's statue and vice versa...

DETERMINED SHIRKING
  WDCS100 'Truant Officer' - 1949

Synopsis:
Donald is the new truant officer and his most important task is to round up his shirking nephews!

Comments:
The theme of Donald tracking down the nephews in order to bring them to go to school was a definite hit with Barks. Beside this story he used the same basic theme in WDCS072 'Railriding Shirkers', WDCS133 'Truant Officer Troubles', and WDCS169 'Houseboat Hooky'.

DUBIOUS UPBRINGING
  WDCS092 'Everything is Allowed' - 1948

Synopsis:
Donald is scolded by a professor in child psychology who states that children are to develop at their own pace.

Comments:
Of course it is the responsibility of all parents to raise their kids, but in this story the nephews are left totally to themselves by Donald who is influenced by a foolish professor. Still, the nephews have no hesitation following the dubious guidance - or lack of same. In WDCS064 'New Year's Resolutions' the nephews also willingly responded to Donald's indulgence by terrorizing him out of his home.
Their strong will and lack of respect was also expressed in WDCS043 Three Dirty Little Ducks and WDCS184 'The Bath Battle' where they swore to nver again tarnish their bodies with soap...

PREMEDITATED MISDEEDS
  WDCS060 'Radiant Radar' - 1945

Synopsis:
Donald invents a radar with a screen through which he can follow the nephews anywhere. But the radar has its flaws...

Comments:
The nephews play a dirty trick on their uncle by purposely luring him into a tent where he is grossly molested by ruthless monkeys. In WDCS071 'Dishonest Swimming' Louie made a bet with Donald that he could swim a certain stretch the fastest. En route the three nephews, unseen by Donald, replace each other in order to maintain the endurance needed to win the bet.
In WDCS112 'Rip van Winkle' the nephews played a cruel joke on their uncle by luring him into believing that he had slept for 40 years just to get him to return to their home.

RECKLESS HARM
  WDCS041 The Iron Pants - 1944

Synopsis:
Donald brags that he knows all the old snowball tricks. The nephews can't resist challenging him...

Comments:
Things quickly get out of control when retaliations fly back and forth. At one point the nephews actually hurt Donald by pointing a lit blowtorch at his rear end!
In WDCS079 'Disastrous Picnic' things escalate even more, when the nephews decide to ruin Donald's and Daisy's picnic by completely ruining both the surroundings and the food.
