All people fall ill from time to time! But in the funny animal universe this is a fairly rare event. Here the characters are much more prone to injure themselves by falling from high places or getting smashed in fights. Still, the stories by Carl Barks occasionally showed samples of health problems in different ways. This page will only concentrate on some of the more special versions of ailments that suddenly occur in the stories. The more general ones such as Uncle Scrooge's reoccurring gout or neighbour Jones' damaging deeds are not topics here.

BEDRIDDEN

FC0223 Lost in the Andes - 1949

Synopsis:
By accident, janitor Donald at The Duckburg Museum discovers that a square rock from Peru in fact is an egg. He is promptly sent out to get more...

Remarks:
Considering the numerous times Donald has been injured or even smashed to pieces it is a wonder that we seldom see him in a hospital bed. Just think of the final panel in WDCS142 'A quiet Vacation' where Donald stumbles away covered with bandages after his tumble down Niagara Falls. He would have been better off in the care of a hospital staff!
But in this story he is temporarily bedridden after having sampled a dish consisting of old square eggs. Another example comes from WDCS158 'Tiresome Bee-ings' in which Donald is hospitalized after having been stung by all of the nephews bees.

NIGHTMARES

WDCS101 'Nightmares' - 1949

Synopsis:
Donald is plagued by nightmares. His doctor recommends he takes up some crocheting to steady his nerves. Then Daisy comes for a visit...

Remarks:
This untypical Donald story deals exclusively with his mental health and we follow him in his disturbing dreams. This was also the case in FC0108 The Firebug in which Donald dreamt he was a pyromaniac.
And perhaps the mountain climbing story in WDCS157 'Old Demontooth' might be considered as some sort of a nightmarish dream to Donald; at least he wakes up in the final panels and is relieved to discover that it was all a bad dream...

INSANITY

WDCS073 'The Gold-Finder' - 1946

Synopsis:
The nephews invent a gold-finder which is tested on a ring that Daisy has received from Donald. It fails the test and Donald has a problem!

Remarks:
In a few stories Donald is driven to insanity. In this one he desperately tries to figure out what really happened to the ring. In WDCS175 'The Taffy Story' the events cause him to hide in a barrel in the psychiatrist's office! And in WDCS079 'The Terrible Picnic' Donald ends up being chained to a tree in order to control him...

STRESS

U$06 'Tralla La' - 1954

Synopsis:
Scrooge is stressed and after having reached his breaking point he travels with Donald and the nephews to Tralla La where the concept of money is unknown. Until they arrive...

Remarks:
In 1954 and 1955 Barks wrote a few consecutive U$ adventure stories which all began in the Money Bin with Scrooge feeling poorly in one way or another. In this one he is heavily stressed to the point where he actually admits to having the need for some relaxation.
Stress and overwork was also the overall theme in SF Fun? What's That? in which both Scrooge and Gyro Gearloose receive doctor's orders to take a vacation just to relax.

DEPRESSION

U$07 'Cibola' - 1954

Synopsis:
Scrooge lacks excitement in his life so he follows Donald and the nephews to the desert in order to collect arrowheads. They also find seven golden cities...

Remarks:
Scrooge is having a real depression in the start of the story, and he is desperate enough to take part in Donald's - to him - miserable little project just to try to cure himself.

ILLNESS

U$08 'The Stone Ray Machine' - 1955

Synopsis:
Scrooge finds an S.O.S. message - someone on an unknown island seeks help. He quickly takes off in the hope of earning a bundle on the rescue expedition...

Remarks:
In the beginning of this story Scrooge is very tired and ill enough to consult a doctor who immediately states that his pores are clogged with gold dust! A good, long sea voyage would be the cure so he takes off.

OVERINDULGING

WDCS282 Bubbleweight Champ - 1964

Synopsis:
The competition between the JW's from Goosetown and Duckburg ends in a tie and now their trainers have to reach a decision. Donald acts for Duckburg...

Remarks:
Overindulging was a frequent theme in Barks' stories, because one of the purposes with a funny animal story is to illustrate excessiveness in different areas. Barks would from time to time let the ducks overeat and in this story Donald definitely drinks too many Gurgleurp Soda Pops.

SUFFOCATION

WDCS177 'In Deep Trouble' - 1955

Synopsis:
Vacation at last! The nephews want to go to the mountains but Donald longs for the beach. A trip inside a diving sphere makes him change his mind...

Remarks:
...because he is accidentally deprived of oxygen inside the tight space of the sphere. Almost the same happened in WDCS097 'Diver's Nightmare' where
Donald was diving for pearls and wound up inside a giant oyster.
In fact, Donald has had several near-death experiences from suffocation. Another interesting example comes from WDCS080 'Chased by Bees' in which Donald hides from a swarm of bees in an airtight trunk in the attic. Barks used almost the same panel to show Donald's suffering as in the panel shown here!

ELECTROCUTION

WDCS095 'The No-money Champs' - 1948

Synopsis:
Donald and Gladstone are bragging about their imaginary wealth but when Daisy asks for a small contribution for her club they have a problem...

Remarks:
Especially in the earlier stories Donald has been on the brink of killing his nephews whether it is on purpose or not. Here is a reversed example where the nephews seriously cripple their uncle with electricity. Don't try this at home, kids!

ANIMAL DISEASES

U$09 The Tuckered Tiger - 1955

Synopsis:
Scrooge offers the prize of his own weight in diamonds to the owner of the animal that can outrun his wonder horse. He feels confident that no one will come to collect!

Remarks:
Real animals can also get sick in Barks' stories. In this one the plot even depends on it; Scrooge's racing horse comes down with a stomach ache and the opponent's tiger is ridden with rheumatism!
