Carl Barks made a number of hooky* stories which is not at all surprising, because such a theme is appealing to readers of funny animal comic books. The subject simply guarantees thrilling anticipation in the beginning and relieved laughter in the end, because most of us have done similar things such as playing hooky from school or shirking from work! In this page you are presented to 10 rather diverse story examples - in chronological order - and you may, ahem, be able to recognize yourself in some of them...

* The informal - and prevailingly American - term Hooky means 'Absence without Leave' and is mostly used in connection with failure to attend school. In this page the term is used in the broadest sense of the word.

  WDCS043 Three Dirty Little Ducks - 1944

Synopsis:
The nephews have turned into soap haters but Donald does not approve. Off to the bath...

Comments:
Personal cleanliness is one of man's obvious duties, so Donald is distraught when his nephews suddenly are not compliant anymore; they only adhere to their motto Always Alert to Save Our Dirt. But, of course, the nephews cannot shirk from their social responsibilities forever, and in the end they are back on the straight and narrow...
...Well, at least until 1955 when Barks made a similar story, WDCS184 'To Bathe or Not to Bathe', in which the nephews swore that they would never again tarnish their bodies with soap. Parenthood is not easy...

  WDCS060 'Under Observation' - 1945

Synopsis:
Donald invents a radar with a screen, through which he can follow the nephews anywhere. But the radar has its flaws...

Comments:
Just as most children the nephews have to do chores around the house. And just as most children they hate it! The nephews repeatedly try to shirk from their chores, but Donald is constantly on to them, and in the end they wind up 'paying' for their antisocial behaviour.

  WDCS072 'Railriding Shirkers' - 1946

Synopsis:
It is the first day after the holidays and Donald discovers that the nephews have run away from home. He goes after them.

Comments:
This was Barks' first school-hooky story out of a total of 5. We follow the nephews' desperate attempts to stay free of Donald's way so he won't discover that they are playing hooky - but to no avail. In the end Donald reacts as a responsible parent by bringing them to understand the errors of their ways.

  WDCS079 'Picnic Panic' - 1947

Synopsis:
Donald and Daisy go out for a picnic and the nephews want to join them instead of going to school. But the answer is
NO! so they decide to ruin the picnic instead!

Comments:
The nephews are real nuisances in this story in which Donald is only trying to have some quality time with his girlfriend. In fact, the nephews decide to ruin the adults' picnic by completely destroying both the surroundings and the food. When Donald at long last fights back the passions run high - ruining everybody's day. And all that because the nephews did not respect a small two-letter word...

  MOC04 Maharajah Donald - 1947

Synopsis:
Through clever trading, the nephews end up with a ticket to India which Donald commandeers. During the trip a Maharajah has a task for him...

Comments:
This can be perceived as some sort of a reverse hooky story! When Donald sends the nephews into a forced vacation at Grandma's farm they revolt and follow their uncle as stowaways on the liner bound for India in order to stay with him. Thus they wind up being more present than absent...

  WDCS100 'Truant Officer' - 1949

Synopsis:
Donald is the new truant officer and his most important task is to round up his shirking nephews!

Comments:
Oddly enough the nephews know nothing of their uncle's new job, and they happily march off for a day's fun in the snow instead of sitting in a stuffy classroom at school. One of their favourite spots is - Hooky Hill...

MOC41 Race to the South Seas - 1949

Synopsis:
Donald and Gladstone are each given a yacht from Scrooge who apparently has been marooned on an island. They both try to be the first to rescue him...

Comments:
This story is quite sensational, because Barks lets Scrooge - the duck universe's most devoted and steady worker - play hooky!!! As it turns out the miser did not at all need to be rescued. He just wanted to be left in peace...

  WDCS133 'The Hooky Players' - 1951

Synopsis:
The nephews try to play hooky from school while Donald is at work. But it is not nearly as easy as they thought!

Comments:
We follow the nephews' increasingly more desperate attempts to stay out of Donald's way, so he won't discover that they are playing hooky. As time goes by they sink deeper and deeper into a quagmire of bad experiences 'just' because they wanted a day off.
The nephews' verbal reactions to their endless encounters with Donald probably constitutes the worst cursing (passable by Disney's strict morals codes) in any Barks story. Idioms such as Sufferin' Sour Tomatoes and Of all the Lowdown, Flea-bitten Luck are scattered around in the story...

  WDCS169 'Houseboat Hooky' - 1954

Synopsis:
It is the first day of school and the nephews are, of course, playing hooky. But Donald was expecting it. Now the chase is on...

Comments:
The nephews have been preparing their disappearance act for a long time, but Donald is quickly on their trail; he has sprinkled gypsum around the house making their footsteps visible, and he soon tracks the schoolboys down. When this is done Donald decides to teach his nephews a lesson instead of simply 'rounding' them up!

  WDCS213 'Spring Cleaning' - 1958

Synopsis:
Donald is doing whatever he can in order to avoid being forced to take part in Daisy's yearly spring cleaning.

Comments:
Last but not least Barks made a story in which Donald plays hooky - and displays some of his less attractive attributes! He simply loathes tedious housework; especially in Daisy's house, and he will go to any length - even to serve his nephews on a silver platter as 'volunteers' - to avoid it!
In WDCS173 'New Year's Resolutions' Donald showed another bad attitude towards the nephews; he lured them into being late for school thus making them hooky victims...
