'A Journey Begins with a Single
Step' is a variant of an ancient Chinese
saying that can easily be adopted for a comic book story into
saying 'A Story Begins with a Single Panel'.
Nothing exceptional about that, except that it is crucial for the
readers' interest that the opening panel (also called an Opening
Splash Panel) induces them to read more.
Carl Barks was a gifted expert in the art of leading his audience
into his stories via his extremely visual opening panels. And he
did so in many ways. In the sub-pages you are presented to a
small selection of 9 - partly overlapping - main groups, but
there are many more.
NB.: All narrative text and character dialogue have been omitted from the examples in order not to confuse them with text from foreign issues, which may vary greatly from the originals. Still, the drawings rarely need text or dialogue in order to be understood; this was yet another of Barks' visual forces.
