In his comic book stories from the duck universe, Carl Barks several times showed us rich concentrations of so-called 'dumb' animals placed in specialized farms, hatcheries, and shelters. Examples include alligators, chickens, falcons, foxes, and salmon. But he also showed us that there is a rather large number of zoos situated in Duckburg. This is quite puzzling, really, because Duckburg is usually perceived as a relatively small city that would not need several zoos (Barks never revealed the precise, actual size of Duckburg except once in WDCS164 'The Wonder Flour', in which we were told that the city had 500 streets). But as this page shows, Duckburg has an abundance of zoos...

WDCS046 Camera Crazy - 1944

Donald is trying to raise some money by snapping photos of interesting and exciting events in Duckburg. At one time he finds himself at the zoo, where he thoughtlessly releases a ferocious bear. Immediately it runs through the streets causing mischief on its way, while Donald is busy with his camera.

WDCS101 'Nightmares' - 1949

In a desperate attempt to steady his nerves Donald reluctantly takes up crocheting, but Daisy must not know. When she gets wind of Donald's girlish hobby anyway, he flees to the zoo, where he is soon cornered by hundreds of Daisy's friends. Donald then chooses the 'easy' way out and drops down into the lions' cage.

FC0263 Trail of the Unicorn - 1950

Scrooge's zoo is not attracting any visitors despite a variety of animals such as the Gnoof from Arkansas! So Scrooge wants the Ducks to find him a real crowd puller namely a genuine Unicorn. After an arduous search expedition to the Himalayas such a fabled animal is added to the zoo.

WDCS157 'Climbing Ordeal' - 1953

Donald and Scrooge make a bet on who will reach the top of Old Demontooth first, and Scrooge soon stoops to cheating when he realizes that he is not as young and vigorous as Donald. He simply rents all of the wild zoo animals to be lifted in helicopters to points above Donald's path to stop his progress and ability to win the bet.

WDCS175 'The Taffy Pull' - 1955

Donald helps Daisy make taffy for sale, and the nephews go out to sell the many bags of candy. Unfortunately, Donald has inadvertently lost a costly diamond ring in one of the taffies, and he now has to race around to recover the many bags, some have already been sold to visitors at the zoo.

U$33 Bongo on the Congo - 1961

Scrooge is determined to make Donald the next tycoon of his vast empire, but Donald is not at all interested. Still, Scrooge is not deterred and tirelessly he chases his ungrateful nephew all over town, which includes a hurried visit to the Duckburg Zoo, where the wild animals watch the couple in disbelief.

WDCS254 Jet Witch - 1961

Gyro Gearloose has invented a flying broom for Halloween, and Donald gets to take a flight during the dark hours. Not only people are panicking due to the unusual sight, but all the zoo animals break free and cause mayhem all over Duckburg.

WDCS259 Jungle Bungle - 1962

As a marksman in archery Donald is invited to Africa to track down the fabled pink-eyed rhinoceros and shoot it with a tranquilizer arrow. This will allow the expedition to return with it to Duckburg's New Zoo. The task is successfully accomplished.

WDCS261 Medaling Around - 1962

Donald has entered a photo competition and he ventures out into the deep woods to get snapshots of the animals. Unfortunately, the Junior Woodchucks' official hound keeps getting in the way by sniffing up the animals first, so Donald decides to ridicule it by going to the zoo and get the scent of a real lion in order to sidetrack the hound.

U$42 Case of the Sticky Money - 1963

The Beagle Boys have suddenly grown very rich, and the perplexed Scrooge is invited to visit their estate and have a guided tour. Among the attractions is a small, highly specialized zoo filled with animals that suit the Beagle Boys' 'business' life. It consists of chicken-stealing coyotes, purse-snatching falcons, and church poor-box robbing rats.

WDCS282 Bubbleweight Champ - 1964

Two burrows of the Junior Woodchucks are competing, when they are being alerted by a mother, whose child has fallen into the zoo's bear pit. Donald tries, in vain, to help, but the other team's leader, Boldan True, manages to dispose of the wild bears and save the day.

U$54 The Billion Dollar Safari - 1964

Once again, business in Scrooge's zoo is bad, despite him displaying several unique animals such as an extinct dodo and a twofaced politician bird! As a publicity stunt Scrooge now offers one billion dollars to anyone who can deliver a speckled elephant with a square trunk.

HDL20 New Zoo Brews Ado
Script: Carl Barks - Graphics: Kay Wright

After his official retirement Barks was persuaded to write a number of stories for a new magazine officially titled Huey, Dewey and Louie Junior Woodchucks (commonly referred to as HDL). In HDL20 he, for the first and only time in his comic book career, used the term Zoo in a story title. You can see a brief synopsis of the story HERE.
