Aliens - in this page referred to as beings that are not normally living on the surface of the Earth - have always been a very popular and strangely intriguing topic in the more colourful comic books. Carl Barks' duck universe is not filled with highly advanced eggheads or terribly menacing monsters from pure science fiction. On the contrary, when Barks made one of his few aliens stories, the beings were mostly either ducklike or humanlike and thus presented far more mellow - and perhaps even more plausible...
Below you are presented to all of Barks' aliens stories. Pay special attention to how different they are in terms of the diversity of the aliens' appearances and actions. Barks was never one for easy solutions; each story has its own cast of likable aliens!

  U$65 Micro-Ducks from Outer Space

Synopsis:
The Sceptics' Club has offered a prize to whoever can produce a genuine flying saucer. Shortly after, such an object lands in Scrooge's office...

Comments:
The visiting aliens come from the planet Micro 4 years travel from Earth. They are very small duck-like pygmies who made the trip in order to get only a few corn kernels which will feed their hungry families back home. After they have done business with Scrooge and left, he already longs for their next visit. So does Donald; he has fallen in love with Princess Teentsy Teen...
Barks once commented on the story: I liked that story! I felt that I had touched on something that was a little different than just about any other space-type story that's come around. I have felt that out in outer space there are good people as well as bad, so in that story I did a little preaching, I guess.

  U$34 Mythtic Mystery

Synopsis:
Scrooge, Donald, and the nephews are blown up in the air to a nearby, small planet. It seems to be Valhalla, the home of the ancient gods!

Comments:
The planet, which in itself has been blown out of course, is inhabited by slightly oversized humanoids and animals. The ducks are welcomed (and Donald falls in love again!), but when they get to know the aliens, the nephews wonder about the aliens' names; they are all from three different mythological faiths! Mythtic*!

* When titling his story Barks performed a subtle, yet brilliant, hint by naming it Mythtic instead of Mythic thus emphasizing the plotline's Mystic background! This wonderful twist is not recognized by that many readers...

  U$53 Interplanetary Postman

Synopsis:
Scrooge takes over the job as postmaster in order to provide better service, but he has to deliver a letter to Venus!!!

Comments:
Apparently, the planet Venus is inhabited by giant humanoids, while planet Mars - which is visited first by mistake - is inhabited by 'a small colony of people-things' as Donald puts it. It is interesting to notice that the ducks have no trouble breathing on the two planets, a fact that Barks never explains...

  FC1025 Dream Planet

Synopsis:
Gyro and Gus Goose travel to a far-away planet where everybody relaxes. Just the thing for Gus but Gyro cannot bear the easygoing lifestyle...

Comments:
The location is somewhere beyond the planet Pluto, and Gus can sit down under a shady tree all day if he wishes. And he must feel right at home, because all the planet's inhabitants resemble him! Again, Barks skips some essentials: How can Gus and Gyro breathe in the alien atmosphere, and where does the sunlight come from?

  U$29 Island in the Sky

Synopsis:
Scrooge decides to hide all his money on an asteroid far away from thieves. But the asteroid is inhabited..

Comments:
...by big-nosed Indians of a diminutive size (actually resembling the Indians in U$18 Land of the Pygmy Indians). Their asteroid is barren and their only food source is eggs from visiting birds coming from an adjacent planet where food exists in abundance. Scrooge finds a way to transport the pygmy Indians to the bountiful asteroid. Notice that the asteroid belt also seems to be inhabited by other creatures such as the ones depicted in the panel.

  DD126 Officer for a Day

Synopsis:
Duckburg's police force as well as the substitute police force are down with the flu, so Donald - as a substitute substitute police officer - has to manage alone.

Comments:
One of Donald's major tasks is to deal with visiting aliens from Venus and their lively dogs(!) resembling octopuses. The aliens have travelled to Earth in order to find out how advanced the Earthlings are, but they soon return in disappointment...
The story is from 1969 when Barks had already been retired for a few years, so he 'just' wrote and sketched it. Initially, Tony Strobl finished the pages, but Dutch artist Daan Jippes later inked another version. The panel shown here is from his hand.

  U$46 Lost Beneath the Sea

Synopsis:
When Scrooge's lucky dime ends up at the bottom of the ocean, he, Donald, and the nephews go after it. They find a strange shipyard on the ocean floor...

Comments:
The shipyard is operated by barrel-shaped Martians with 4 arms and different hats - and their leader has a sense of humour! They understand the ducks perfectly (They speak Earth language number 623x with a slight 737k accent), and in the end they become good friends with the ducks, who even invite them back...

  U$24 The Twenty-four Carat Moon

Synopsis:
Scrooge hears of a small moon of solid gold behind the Moon. He immediately blasts off to claim the precious object. However, it seems to be inhabited...

Comments:
Barks' aliens stories normally contain a host of aliens, but in this one there is only one - Muchkale from Venus. He was marooned on the gold moon almost 8 centuries ago, and now he thinks it is time to leave. In consequence, he sells his moon to Scrooge for a handful of dirt!!! Dollar signs keep popping up in Scrooge's eyes...
Notice that this story is the only one of Barks' alien space stories, in which the ducks actually wear breathing gear.

  WDCS199 'Bigger and Bigger'

Synopsis:
Gyro invents an imagining machine by which one by force of thought can travel wherever he wants. Donald and the nephews pop up to Jupiter, where everything is much larger than on Earth!

Comments:
This story may be a little off in terms of the main subject; the ducks do fly to a number of different, far-away planets and stars, but it happens without them moving an inch. It is all a thought experiment. Still, the topic of alien beings is certainly intact. In the course of the short story the ducks 'meet' (in chronological order) multiple grasshoppers and flies, a cow, a hen, chickens, a mouse, one more grasshopper, gnats, a red Indian on a horse, even more grasshoppers, and - chicken pox germs...

  WDCS093 'Race to the Moon'

Synopsis:
Donald is hired to fly the first rocket ship to the Moon but a villainous guy is competing in another vessel...

Comments:
Donald and the nephews (they came along as stowaways!) eyeball a moonman with a split personality! This becomes apparent when a frustrated Donald whacks him on the head; the alien splits in two, and this process continues as long as Donald is batting. In the end the alien collects himself and becomes, once again, perfectly self-centered...

EXTRA

Knowing of Barks' general, colossal inventiveness it is not exactly surprising to learn that he also invented aliens that, in fact, do live on our Earth - but hidden under the surface. Here are the three stories:

U$05 'Atlantis'

Synopsis:
Scrooge buys all the 1916 quarters in the world just to chuck them into the ocean. Except for one. It will be worth a fortune. But soon Scrooge regrets his decision...

Comments:
The ducks get to meet the people of fabled Atlantis and hear of their history.

U$13 Land Beneath the Ground

Synopsis:
Scrooge digs a tunnel under his Money Bin to ensure that the ground is solid. Here he encounters Terry Fermy where the inhabitants makes earthquakes...

Comments:
The extraterrestrials living under Earth's crust may rightly be named intraterrestrials.

U$68 Hall of the Mermaid Queen

Synopsis:
One day all the money from the Money Bin disappears through a hole into the ocean. Now Scrooge has to find a way to regain his money...

Comments:
The ducks encounter multiple mermen and a mermaid in their quest to recover it.
