Carl Barks often used real bears (i.e. not including numerous anthropomorphic bear characters) in his Disney comic book stories, but most of the appearances were either ornamental or of little consequence; usually the bears just served as menacing characters. Below you will find stories involving bears in longer sequences, and they are presented in chronological order.

  WDCS046 Camera Crazy - 1944

Synopsis:
Donald Duck tries to snap a photo worth a great sum of money but he has to find the right subject first!

Comments:
As Donald wanders about Duckburg he meets a big bear that has escaped from the zoo, and he immediately sees a prime photo opportunity if he just follows it around.
This was not the only story containing zoo bears in Duckburg. In fact, Barks later made two more stories in which bears from the zoo had important (yet small) roles. This happened in WDCS175 'Taffy Trouble' and WDCS282 Bubbleweight Champ.

  FC0062 Frozen Gold - 1945

Synopsis:
Donald is hired to fly medicine up north in his new plane. A couple of bandits are interested in the trip as well but for quite another reason...

Comments:
While temporarily snowblind Donald happens to encounter a big polar bear that does not take kindly to him fondling his body in the misconception that he has met an Eskimo wearing a nice fur coat!
Barks used polar bears in several other stories; FG1948 Donald in Toyland,
WDCS232 Under the Polar Ice, WDCS233 Knights of the Flying Sleds are examples (and more to follow later on)...

  FC0178 Christmas on Bear Mountain - 1947

Synopsis:
Donald and the nephews are borrowing Uncle Scrooge's mountain cabin for Christmas, but Scrooge's intention is to figure out just how brave Donald really is ...

Comments:
... by dressing up as a bear in a bearskin (which also Donald did in VP1 Camp Counselor, by the way)! But before it comes to that, the Ducks have been chasing a bear cub around in the cabin, while mother bear has been chasing the Ducks around!
The story is, for obvious reasons, perceived as the bear story, and it is true that it actually involves no less than 5 bears (do you recall them all?)! See a special page on the story HERE.

  WDCS110 'Goldilocks' - 1949

Synopsis:
Donald goes to bring his nephews back from summer camp but they have decided to play Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Real bears get involved!

Comments:
Of course, Barks would have a go at the famous British fairy tale that has been published in several rather different versions. And of course Barks opted for a version of his own (but still incorporating real bears), in which several high-ranking Duckburg characters are mistaken for bears as well...

  FC0256 Luck of the North - 1949

Synopsis:
Donald gets tired of Gladstone Gander's never-ending luck so he sends him up north with a fake treasure map. But Donald's bad conscience will not let him alone...

Comments:
Again, Barks makes a story involving a ferocious polar bear in a perilous scene, in which Donald almost loses his life!
A few years later Barks made FC0408 The Golden Helmet, in which another ferocious polar bear chases Donald on his boat, until it finds all the supplies and eats every crumb...

  FC0456 Back to the Klondike - 1953

Synopsis:
Scrooge is having trouble with his bad memory but after a visit to the doctor he recalls a huge gold nugget he once left behind in Alaska.

Comments:
This story marks the one-time presence of two memorable characters; the former golddigger Glittering Goldie and her guard bear Blackjack named after her former saloon The Blackjack Ballroom. The bear is very protective of its owner, a fact that the ducks gets to heed repeatedly...

  WDCS191 'The Uranium Caps' - 1956

Synopsis:
Donald is vacationing in the deep woods and he uses a scintillator to disclose the whereabouts of the nephews. But it only functions if it is turned on...

Comments:
The nephews have been equipped with special tracking devices on top of their caps, but by coincidence they are taken over by a curious mother bear and her cubs.
Barks made several stories featuring wild bears roaming in the region of Duckburg. Other examples are FC0328 In Old California, WDCS261 Medaling Around, and WDCS274 Gall of the Wild.

  SF2 Fun? What's That? - 1959

Synopsis:
Scrooge and Gyro Gearloose have never gone on a vacation but now the doctor demands that they do. But it is not that simple for the two gentlemen to just relax...

Comments:
At one point they rest in a cave but they are surprised by the resident, a large bear, that eats all the sourdough they had prepared for biscuits the next day. This proves to be too much for the bear, but Gyro's metal stickman known as Little Helper saves the day.
Little Helper was in focus as well in another story featuring Gyro namely FC1095 The Bear Tamer, in which he manages to divert the pushy attention of a bear trying to consume Gyro...

  WDCS222 'Moving Along' - 1959

Synopsis:
Donald is very successful at his moving job until one day he is hired to move the animals from a zoo...

Comments:
The expected tame animals are not all that cooperative as Donald tries to place them on a tall mesa top, and especially the bear causes some problems, but soon it is trapped on the other side, after Donald has pulled the walk planks off the attached bridge...

  U$59 North of the Yukon - 1965

Synopsis:
Scrooge is in danger of loosing his entire fortune in a desperate dog sled race in Alaska...

Comments:
This was the last story in which Barks used a polar bear, and for the only time it is a benevolent bear. Poly Poly, as it is called, is the draft animal of a local troop of Junior Woodchucks and the nephews have commandeered the transport sled in order to lend Scrooge a hand. And a polar bear can really pull a sled!

While making his normal Disney duck stories during the late 1940s Barks briefly switched to alternative artwork in which a bear was the starring character. See more HERE.
