They are a trinity. They are usually referred to as the nephews. Their names are Huey, Dewey, and Louie Duck. Carl Barks did not invent the three boys, but he was the one who slowly changed their personality from being the brats we know from early cartoons and newspaper strips to being very responsible family members who often acted more adult than their uncles Donald and Scrooge. Along the line the boys also found time to join the worthy and helpful boy scout organisation The Junior Woodchucks, which, JW Guidebook in hand, supplied them with all the knowledge in the world! All giant steps on their evolutionary ladder...

This page will primarily show you examples of the nephews' varying mentality as a group through the years. They only have one personality because they always act as one helping and supporting each other, which earn them the well deserved nickname of The Brothers.

WDCS181 'Building Bridges'

The JW organisation is renowned for its tendency to spread medals and titles around among its members. In this story the Generals Huey, Dewey, and Louie are presented with a quart of medals and titled Supreme Exalted Bridge Masters of the Yawning Gulfs.

WDCS056 'The Food Mystery'

The brothers have acted as detectives on a number of occasions. In this story food is mysteriously vanishing from the family fridge every night and the boys find out that Donald is the culprit. They confront him with hard facts in the shape of indisputable fingerprints.

FC1055 The Double Date

The brothers have an ambivalent relationship to girls. In this story they are very gallant to the nieces April, May, and June, but in WDCS181 'Bridge Building Brawl' they are eagerly fighting a whole troop of Chickadees, the girl scout version of the Junior Woodchucks.

WDCS092 'Everything is Allowed'

The brothers have been known to invent things on occasion. Here is one of the more unusual of their inventions humbly described as 'the world's most colossal sandwich' (Eat your heart out, Dagwood Bumstead)...

FC0223 Lost in the Andes

Although they can be brats from time to time the brothers have the ability to keep their heads cool in the direst of straits. In this story they figure out how to escape from lifelong incarceration in a Peruvian village by blowing square bubbles!

U$46 Lost Beneath the Sea

The brothers have learned numerous skills in the JWs. Besides mastering the art of judo, which they demonstrate in this story, they are experts in track laying, signalling, bugling, rescuing people, and navigation - just to name a few...

WDCS131 'The Unluckiest Golfer'

The brothers can be extremely caring; in this story they really feel sorry for their uncle who is ready to stay in the closet for the rest of his life, because he has bad luck all the time. They even offer to join him in the closet...

FG1949 New Toys

The brothers act just like ordinary kids in this Christmas story; they want lots of toys for Christmas but Donald refuses as they already have enough things, and their Christmas list contains wishes for toys of the same kind they have already got.

WDCS185 'New Year's Resolutions'

In this story we are presented to a string of the brothers' preferences in food delicacies such as this chocolate cake. Other examples: Popcorn (FC0367), ice cream (FC0238), ice cream sodas (U$42), and taffy (WDCS064).

WDCS228 The Watchful Parent

The brothers are occasionally seen as more responsible than Donald, and they are often required to rescue him from self-inflicted accidents and mindless actions.

WDCS181 'Bridge Building Contest'

The JW Guidebook has all the answers in the world, and the brothers have to consult it often, especially when Donald is around needing to be rescued...

DD26 Trick or Treat

The brothers often dress for seasonal occasions. In this story they wear their Halloween costumes, in other stories they wear Christmas and Thanksgiving outfits.

U$19 The Mines of King Solomon

Using their special JW animal-call whistles the brothers can master all animals. Here they treat their uncles to a safe and comfortable way of transport in the Andes.

FC0367 A Christmas for Shacktown

In several stories we have witnessed that the brothers know how to start the day with a hearty breakfast. In this case they enjoy a bowl of oatmeal.

WDCS154 'Real Estate War'

When the brothers really want something they are prepared to fight for it to the end. In this story they wish to keep an old mansion as their personal playground.

WDCS041 The Iron Pants

The brothers can sometimes be utterly reckless and totally irresponsible in their actions. At one point in this story - in which Donald is repeatedly being harmed - they actually scorch him by pointing a lit blowtorch at his rear end! And in WDCS095 'Fund Raising' they had no hesitation in trying to electrocute him!!!

WDCS092 'Everything is Allowed'

Of course, it is the responsibility of all parents to raise their kids, but in this story the brothers are left totally to themselves by Donald who is influenced by a foolish professor. Still, the boys have no problem following the dubious guidance - or lack of same - that leads to the demolition of their home.

WDCS195 'Train Collision'

The brothers are as brainy as Einstein in this story, in which they try to solve a mathematical engineering problem for their next JW merit badges. They have to calculate exactly how two toy trains can avoid a head-on collision. Next they move on to solve a real math problem of two real trains on a head-on collision course...

WDCS139 'Rocket Wing the Pigeon'

The brothers have to partake in a normal household's tedious chores. In this one we are shown their skills peeling potatoes.

WDCS227 'Lost in the Woods'

The JWs have many important tasks, most of which are helping people. In this story they are training in finding lost persons.

Fineart Silent Night

In this Christmas story we learn that the brothers - as well as Donald - have terrible singing voices.

WDCS132 'Millpond Incidents'

The brothers are responsible members of the JWs. In this story they try for merit badges; General Huey must make a bow and arrow for his badge in archery, General Dewey must make a canoe for his badge in Indian crafts, and General Louie must train for his badge in lifesaving. They succeed - despite Donald's 'help' - and end up as Ten Star Generals.

WDCS127 'April Fool's Day'

The brothers can be just as hardheaded as their uncle at times. Obviously, a nice head-banging gets rid of a lot of frustrations!

U$48 The Many Faces of Magica ...

It seems that the brothers carry many different, and sometimes voluminous, objects such as the Junior Woodchucks' Guide Book in their sweaters. In this story they carry big bars of soap around! In VP1 'A Day in the Country', they had all their pockets emptied and the contents displayed at Grandma's kitchen table. Not even a frog was missing...

WDCS214 'Flower Power'

Sometimes the brothers seem fairly stupid. In this story they are not able to come up with the names of 4 random flowers for a school project!

WDCS223 'Kites Galore'

Often the brothers have to put up with their uncle's lack of sensitivity and caution. In this story he accidentally destroys their numerous, new kites.

WDCS089 'Sleepy Night Watchman'

The brothers are usually in place when their uncle needs mental support and a boost of moral. Here they help him to stay awake on his new job as a night watchman...

WDCS186 'The Ice Taxies'

On several occasions the brothers have displayed a keen sense of enterprising ingenuity. In this story they have constructed an ice taxi in order to earn some money.

WDCS184 'The Bath Battle'

Presumably, all kids go through a period in their tender lives, when they object to being washed. The brothers are no exceptions; in this story they will never again tarnish their bodies with soap...

WDCS168 'The House Pet'

In several stories the brothers come through as being exceptionally gullible. In this one they readily swallow Donald's trick of a tiny pet crocodile explosively growing into a monstrous monster.
