Gyro Gearloose (commonly known as Inventor of Anything) rarely made inventions that could be used in today's world. Usually it was a question of coming up with extremely skilled solutions for people who had specific problems. So he invented teleporters, instant food out of nowhere, thought-developers, and one-man flying contraptions on end. Carl Barks developed his brilliant chicken character - with no birdbrain - from a modest start, in which he was merely jumping along on his pogo stick trying to churn a quart of cream into butter, to the breathtaking and surprising - and still somewhat believable - inventions that quickly followed.

This page will primarily show you some examples of Gyro's special personality as well as a few of his inventions, which may all earn him the well deserved nickname of The Genius.

U$15 'The Cat Translator'

The small stickman known as Little Helper was created by Barks in order to fill the numerous panels in which Gyro was 'just' seen inventing and talking to himself. Despite his obvious lack of facial expression and silence he often upstages Gyro, who seldom seems to register that he is around.

U$14 'The Neighbour Fence'

It would seem that Newton's famous Law of Gravity does not apply to Gyro. At least he never heeds the famous law. In numerous stories Gyro invented the most spectacular law-defying means of relaxation and transportation as the most natural thing in the world. Examples: Cars, scooters, chairs, hammocks, and sleds.

U$28 'The Inventor Contest'

Now, who is the best (or worst!) amnesiac in the duck universe? There can be little dispute that Gyro takes home the prize by a wide margin. When he is home inventing, he is oblivious to his surroundings, and when he steps outdoor he is still in a world of his own. Not even a horde of mice attracks his attention...

WDCS239 The Village Blacksmith

Despite all of his genius - or maybe because of it - Gyro seems incapable of dealing with typical everyday problems. In this case he is manning a simple waterpump, but he is not able to get it to work.

FC1095 'His Shining Hour' (1-pager)

In just two stories we have had a glimpse of Gyro's feet. They are nothing like chicken feet(!), in fact, they look thoroughly human. In U$23 'The Swimming Rookie' it even became evident that he has 5 toes on each foot!

U$38 The Inventor Battle

Gyro is never hesitant to participate in an inventors' contest to prove that he is the best. In this story he seems to have met his match in a new neighbour who produces brilliant inventions in an endless stream.

U$25 'The Wishing Well'

Gyro is one of the few primary characters who dresses like a human: shirt, trousers, shoes. The shirt is somewhat enigmatic, though, because it has only one button and no apparent openings, so it will forever be a secret how Gyro changes his shirt. His dress is completed by a waistcoat, which he wears the year round.

FC1095 Cave of the Winds

Gyro has little knowledge of - or concern for - money. He almost never writes out a bill for services rendered, except in this story where Scrooge demands a reasonable bill(!). Gyro issues one for one dollar(!!), which the more down-to-Earth Little Helper promptly changes into reading 100,000 dollars, which Scrooge in turn pays(!!!).

U$26 'Krankenstein Gyro'

Following a trip to the movies, Gyro is inspired to create life! Through the years countless stories and films have carried the intriguing - and impossible - theme of creating intelligent life from lifeless material or inferior life forms. Fortunately, in the end, it becomes clear that not even the genius Gyro is able to create life.

FC1047 The Gab Muffer

Just as one may expect from a genius in his field, Gyro is a poor advertiser of his own merits. Several times he is seen wandering about pushing a handcart in a pitiful effort to offer his services.

FC1184 The Cube

Gyro has invented a new game, in which large plastic cubes with holes are hurled around. But the game is not a success, so Gyro uses the cubes as protection from Grandma's overzealous farm animals.

U$34 Wily Rival

Gyro is very aware of other inventors and their inventions. In this story, where he waits at the patent office, he is just dying to find out what his rival at the seat next to him has invented.

U$35 Fast Away Castaway

None of the ducks are ever seen with a dilated stomach from overeating, because their stomachs are situated in the plumper half of their bodies, but Gyro is different. He has a humanlike shape, so his stomach is much more detectable. In this story he gorges himself with delicacies such as Broiled Patagonian Piffle Birds, Chocolate Stuffed Lobster Claws in Hollandaise Gravy, and Ambrosia in Cantaloupe soused with Peach Meringue...

U$17 'Tricky Tackle'

Gyro Gearloose has always been defined as the greatest inventor in the duck universe, and we - as well as all the Duckburgians - expect him to produce one more spectacular invention after another. But in this story we are puzzled: Gyro is on a fishing trip amongst a crowd of other anglers, and he catches so many fish that he is accused of using one of his inventions, but he is not. He is just having a good time - and a lot of luck...

U$32 That Small Feeling - 1961

The most unlikely person in the whole duck universe to have an evil streak must be Gyro. In this story a witch doctor has no hesitation changing Gyro permanently into a midget in order to avoid paying him for his services. The doctor ends up being thrown out of the house in midget size himself to an uncertain destiny by a restored Gyro. Thereby Barks actually closes the story by showing an alarming evil streak in one of his primary characters, the gentle Gyro!

U$23 'The Swimming Rookie'

Gyro has never learned to swim so he fills his swimming pool with Jello in order not to sink like a stone...

U$40 'Posthasty Postman'

Once Gyro grew tired of inventing and took a job as a mailman (which, of course, did not stop him from inventing)...

U$27 The Firefly Tracker

One of the very rare occasions in which Gyro in fact recognizes - and uses - the little stickman.

U$32 That Small Feeling

Although Gyro is always regarded as a somewhat mad inventor he seems to have had an educational background after all. At least, in he has an official inventors' diploma hanging on his wall.

CP8 Grandma's Present

Does Gyro grow his own sponge-like hair? Hard to say. In U$15 'The Cat Translator' he exclaims: Well, float my toupee!, suggesting that he is wearing a wig. But in this story he seems to have his own hair.

U$28 'The Inventor Contest'

Part of the fun is seeing Gyro invent strange and impossible things, but in some stories he only improves on things that are already well-known. Here it is a mousetrap, and in U$37 'Pop-up' he repaired a toaster.

FC1184 Monsterville

Gyro was asked to change Duckburg into a place of total relaxation. Now it has become a futuristic city where he frisks about with an abundance of plausible inventions - a weather dome covering a whole city, one-man hovercraft vehicles, teaching devices in your pillow, thinking fire hydrants, and ultramodern transportation devices such as air-cushion cars, slideways, and monorails.

U$46 A Helper's Helping Hand

Gyro (i.e. Barks) has often made inventions that later emerged in real life. In this story he uses his combined rocket belt and portable sprayer to paint a bridge. A rocket belt, that can lift a man up into the air and make it possible for him to fly around at will, was first seen publicly at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, USA, at the opening ceremony. This happened 21 years after the story was published!

PP8 Picnic

Gyro is asked to help the many picnickers who are unsatisfied with their troublesome visits to nature (bad weather, irritating animals etc.). At an outing he experiences the drawbacks of picnicking in nature, and we follow how he builds more and more protection around him, until he inadvertently has build a house! In bitter resentment he exclaims: Doggoned if I don't get handed the most impossible jobs!

SF2 Fun? What's That?

Gyro is wearing the exact same glasses as Scrooge but due to his narrower beak the bridge between the lenses is somewhat shorter.

FC1095 The Bear Tamer

Gyro's greatest culinary feat is the invention of the Gyroburger. His recipe: Fishcake on rye with catsup, mustard, onions, and peanut butter...

U$26 'Krankenstein Gyro'

Gyro's hat is the brainchild of Barks and it can be best described as a children's hat with a strap that goes under the chin. It also resembles a sailor's hat somewhat.

DBP 'The Impenetrable Money Bin'

Gyro is certainly a well-travelled inventor. In this story he travels to the asteroids in order to obtain a metal strong enough to open the Money Bin, and in FC1025 Dream Planet Gyro and Gus Goose travel to a far-away planet where everybody does nothing but relax.

FC1184 Mighty but Miserable

Can Gyro get angry? Being as absent-minded as he is the logical answer would be No. But in this story Gyro shows that he has some temperament; the Beagle Boys are ganging up against him and, with the help of a power box, he manages to neutralize them using striking arguments!

WDCS171 'Impervi-waxing the Bin'

What is Gyro's secret, then? Well, some of the Duckburgians voluntarily bang their heads from time to time. In Donald's case it always calms him down (small wonder!), and in Gyro's case the self-inflicted banging with a hammer provokes ideas for new inventions!
