Carl Barks dreamed up many stories in which Donald Duck found himself in a web of Imbroglio*. Not too surprising as this is how his character generally works in the Disney stories and cartoons, and Donald has just the right amount of thoughtlessness and lack of awareness to be entangled in situations where anybody else would be wise enough to let their common sense rule and act accordingly. Here are a few examples of Donald embroiled in some of his most spectacular self-victimizations.

* The term Imbroglio can be defined as Entangled in Perplexing or Embarrassing Misunderstandings.

  WDCS192 'The Salmon Hatchery' - 1956

Synopsis:
Donald claims to be a fish culture expert and lands a job in a salmon hatchery. Soon he is up against a kingfisher!

Comments:
One of Donald's most noticeable traits was his tendency to brag about things of which he had no knowledge, and Barks used this regrettable flaw in a great many stories. In this one Donald tried to convince those around him that he was a fish expert.
Other examples: In WDCS055 'The Cow-Puncher' Donald portrayed himself as the greatest cowboy in the world, in WDCS132 'The JW Merit Badges' he perceived himself as a scouting expert which nearly cost him his life, and in WDCS161 'The Fix-It Shop' he was overpowered by his own lack of practical skills.

  WDCS201 'A Dyeing Problem' - 1957

Synopsis:
Donald is hired to pour bug powder into Duckburg's water reservoir but by accident he pours red dye into it instead. The result is somewhat different!

Comments:
Although Donald senses that something is terribly wrong he does nothing to hinder or remedy the mistake. His thoughtlessness brings on an environmental disaster that f
orces him to retreat to a safe haven in Africa!
In
WDCS191 'The Tracker' Donald is vacationing in the deep woods and he uses a scintillator to disclose the whereabouts of the nephews. But it only functions if it is turned on, a simple fact that escapes him at a crucial point...

  CP1 A Letter to Santa - 1949

Synopsis:
Donald has forgotten to mail the nephews' letter to Santa, and now he must buy the present himself. But they have asked for a steam shovel...

Comments:
Trust Donald to misunderstand the nephews' wish, which is a toy model and not a real one as he thinks. Donald even manages to make Scrooge think the very same thing, and soon they are both approaching the Duck's home with their giant presents!
In CP9 Christmas in Duckburg Donald made the same 'sizeable' mistake; the nephews wished for a toy model of a Ferris wheel, and Donald wanders out to buy a real one...

  WDCS178 'Neighbour Trouble' - 1955

Synopsis:
Donald moves to a quieter neighbourhood in order to get a good night's sleep. But it is not that simple with an alpenhorn blower in the house...

Comments:
Despite all good intentions of being a good neighbour it does not take long before Donald starts a noise war with his next door neighbour. Although things escalate due to misinterpretations they are still utterly destructive. And all problems could have been solved quite easily, if Donald had just rung the neighbour's doorbell and had a talk with him instead!
In WDCS048 'The Putty War' Donald has one of many bouts with neighbour J. Jones, this time over some putty. Both of them try to destroy each other instead of figuring out what the problem is...

  WDCS100 'Truant Officer Donald' - 1949

Synopsis:
Donald is the new truant officer and his most important task is to round up his shirking nephews!

Comments:
After a while the nephews let themselves be caught by Donald in order to ridicule him, because they know it is Saturday - and no school day at all. Donald is left with egg on his face...
In WDCS196 'The Snow Statue Contest' all Duckburgians are competing to build the finest snow statue and Donald thinks that a certain poor family should win. But the nephews' statue is better looking. What Donald does not realize is that he and the nephews all work for the same goal - making sure that the poor family winds up with the prize money.

  WDCS073 'The Gold-finder' - 1946

Synopsis:
The nephews invent a gold-finder which is tested on a ring that Daisy has received from Donald. It fails the test and Donald has a problem!

Comments:
In this very tangled story one misunderstanding replaces the next, until Donald - in the last panel - is ready for an asylum trying to figure out what has happened...
In WDCS254 Jet Witch
the Duckburgians decide to hold a quiet Halloween away from town, but Donald forgets this vital piece of information resulting in him misunderstanding the complete lack of visible festivity in Duckburg. He sets out to find his fellow Duckburgians wrecking most of the town on his way...

  WDCS271 A Stone's Throw from Ghost Town - 1963

Synopsis:
Donald wants to buy a small ranch but is tricked into buying a worthless piece of land from an eloquent estate agent.

Comments:
Donald's head is filled up with rosy dreams to a degree where the real estate agent can easily lure him; fine soil means a bag of dirt, a lovely spring means an old sofa spring, a nearby city means a ghost town, and so on.
Donald was the gullible victim of several other real estate agents in other stories, where he tried to get something for next to nothing. Examples are WDCS051 'The Dream Cabin', WDCS143 'Gems in the Desert', and WDCS243 Turkey Trouble.

  WDCS070 'Top Dog!' - 1946

Synopsis:
The nephews beg Donald for a small and lively multi-breed dog but he insists on buying a posh and pedigreed one...

Comments:
Donald is under the misapprehension that a touch of snobbery can go a long way, and he fails to acknowledge that the nephews' affectionate and live half-breed dog has greater qualities than his own haughty one.
In WDCS091 'Turmoil Party' Donald is ready to snob again, as he feels that he has been a nobody long enough. So he gives an elaborate garden party for the cream of local society, and the nephews are to furnish the entertainment. Donald ends up much wiser.

  WDCS269 A Matter of Factory - 1963

Synopsis:
Scrooge makes Donald the manager of one of his motels in order to show that his nephew is not a complete nobody. But 'motelling' is not that easy...

Comments:
Despite hard work and good intentions Donald does not succeed, because he is constantly misreading the cheating guests, who make him a blameless victim.
In
FC0147 Volcano Valley Donald again ended up at the wrong end of the stick, when he gullibly sold his giant bomber airplane for 300,000 Volcanovian Pezozies. Little did he know that the apparently vast sum only equalled 3 dollars!

  WDCS288 Hero of the Dike - 1964

Synopsis:
A small hole in Duckburg's dike is discovered and Gladstone runs for help while Donald puts his finger in the hole to close it up. Not a long-term solution...

Comments:
Donald's unselfish action keeps the dike from breaking, but when he needs something more durable he turns to a nearby stick without realizing that it is actually a stick of dynamite. The inevitable and predictable disastrous flood follows. Still, Donald is perceived as some kind of hero...
In WDCS263 The Candy Kid Donald again made a bad mistake involving explosives. This time he was required to fetch a bunch of firework rockets in a dark room, which caused him to strike a match! This time he 'retired' to Timbuktu...
