In 1952 Carl Barks delivered a Disney comic book story to his employer Western Publishing. It was a 10-pager starring Donald Duck, Daisy Duck, and the nephews. The story was supposed to be included in the September issue of WDCS144, but it was rejected by Western Publishing's editor. It has since been known among Barksists as 'The Golden Apples Story'. It was loosely based on the Greek myth of The Apples of the Hesperides, and took place during Duckburg's annual apple festival at which Daisy appeared as a jealous and crusty battleaxe - and that got it rejected. The story has since been lost...

The story has later been loosely reconstructed and published twice. First by Robert E. Klein (script, drawings) and later by Geoffrey Blum (script) and Daan Jippes (drawings).

Script writer:

American Barks-connoisseur and biographer Geoffrey Blum lives in California. He is perhaps best known for his work with the mammoth productions The Carl Barks Library and The Carl Barks Library in Color, but he has also written several Disney duck stories.

Drawing artist:

The Dutch Daniel Jan 'Daan' Jippes has worked with Disney material most of his life; partly in California, USA. He is known as one of the best interpreters of Barks' clear and elastic drawing style as well as in imagination. His multiple front covers are considered real gems.

D/D2002-012 'THE GOLDEN APPLES'

The second story from Duckburg's annual apple festival has several deviations compared to Barks' supposed storyline; for instance, it fills 14 pages, it incorporates Scrooge McDuck, it incorporates Magica de Spell (who was not invented in 1952), and the Number One Dime plays an important role. Furthermore, Barks appears in a supporting role as farmer Temecula Sam (Barks and his wife Garé used to live in a mobile home in Temecula).

The initial plot has been turned around meaning that Daisy - as the reining apple queen - has to catch up with Donald in order to get his apple and regain the title. But several ladies are on the same mission hoping to be the next apple queen. One is Magica who has no intention in participating in the race; she has stolen Scrooge's Number One Dime but chased by him she succeeds in hiding the coin in one of the apples before the run. Luckily, the nephews are on to her, and they succeed in hiding coins in all the apples. Magica is checkmate and Scrooge can have his dime back - and Daisy can have her title back...
