NON-DISNEY PAINTINGS

REMARKS:

1. The lists in the sub-pages have been given the code numbers that Barks used. For example, his first painting from 1961 is also known as 1-61.
2. Barks' selling prices - all in dollars, of course - were based on two important factors; the size of the individual painting and how much work (how much detail) was necessary. Barks added a mandatory 5% tax to the prices.
3. Several times Barks gave a 10% discount off the agreed prices. The prices shown are all his net prices.
4. The purchasers of the paintings were a mixture of friends and collectors. Their names are all known to this website, but they will not be revealed without the consent of the individual buyers.
5. Several of the paintings never received an official title. Brief descriptions (which are Barks' own words) are placed within parentheses.
6. In general, the paintings are made using oil or acrylic colours (see more
HERE). In some cases watercolours have been included. This is primarily true if they are parts of Barks' coding system in order not to leave gaps in the progressing order.
7. Many of the paintings - especially the older ones - were either given away, sold several years later, or just never sold. As for the last-mentioned group it can be suspected that Barks painted them over at some point to start on another motif.
8. The paintings were sometimes sold for higher prices than initially booked. Only the first booked prices are mentioned if the paintings were purchased immediately.
9. Almost all of the paintings were mounted in more or less expensive frames which had some influence on the sales prices.
10. The Price columns contain two codes: A 0 (zero) means that Barks gave away the painting (he still booked an asking price, though), and a ? (question mark) signals that it is uncertain what happened to the painting price-wise, if sold, or that it remained in Barks' possession without ever being purchased until it was auctioned off (at a high price) after his death.
11. Many of the painting motifs can be found on this website as preliminary sketches.
12. The rendered sizes of the paintings in the sub-pages are not comparative to each other but merely sized to meet the standard layout design for the pages.

The listings are by no means always complete (mostly due to Barks' sometimes sluggish way of booking his work in an orderly fashion). So if you possess relevant information that is not found in the sub-pages you are hereby cordially invited to come forward and share. Please contact cbarks@cbarks.dk.
