Rivers are natural streams of fresh water that flow into other bodies of water such as oceans or lakes. Most rivers are fed from mountain snow, rainfall, or smaller streams. The fresh water and the rivers' natural, erosional sediments are very important factors in nature's ecology. Carl Barks made many stories in which different rivers were graphically displayed, but only a relatively few in which the rivers were important ingredients in the story plots. Here is a collection.
The selected stories are placed in chronological order.

  FC0029 The Mummy's Ring - 1943

Synopsis:
Donald and the nephews are presented with a ring which interests some shady characters. They travel to Egypt and find living mummies...

Comments:
The river portrayed and used in this story is one of the most important and influential rivers in the world - the Nile. One of civilization's cradles stood at its shores, and to this day its waters are crucial to Egypt's agriculture. The Ducks travel up and down the Nile a few times during this story, and Barks was very careful to include several real landmarks thus greatly adding to the general atmosphere.

  WDCS054 'Skate Race' - 1945

Synopsis:
Donald and the nephews decide to race to Pumpkinburg on skates. But Donald stoops to cheating...

Comments:
The whole story shows the Ducks skating down a nameless frozen river to Pumpkinburg, and Barks makes sure that the scenery changes as they progress; bridges, bends, and business buildings come in rapid succession. You get the feeling that you are on a typical American river at wintertime.

FC0108 The Terror of the River - 1946

Synopsis:
Donald becomes the owner of a houseboat and travels down the river with his nephews. But the river is haunted by a sea serpent.

Comments:
The Ducks travel to Floodout, Ohio, which is situated 2,400 miles from Duckburg. The name of the town seems strangely appropriate, because the nearby river is flooded most of the year thus also flooding the town! Still, none of the inhabitants have any intention of leaving the place...

  WDCS190 'Swimming Race' - 1956

Synopsis:
The nephews and Donald get into a swimming contest. But Donald plans to cheat by using a submarine to help him along.

Comments:
Another race between the Ducks but this time in the warm summer. They pass the same sort of scenery as in WDCS054 'Skate Race', but we are told that they race another river; this time the goal is at Skeetertown.

  U$22 The Golden River - 1958

Synopsis:
Scrooge buys a valley for peace and quiet. But a waterfall there looks like it is flowing gold!

Comments:
The British philosopher and author John Ruskin (1819-1900) wrote The King of The Golden River, a fairy tale set in the land of Stiria which tells of the good-hearted Gluck and his mean older brothers, Schwartz and Hans, who seek gold and get their just rewards! Barks liked the concept and transformed it to his duck universe.

  U$GTD 'River Race' - 1959

Synopsis:
Scrooge and Captain Beagle own paddle-wheelers on the Mississippi River and a contest shall decide who gets a certain job.

Comments:
The story of paddle-wheelers in a race on the mighty Mississippi must have appealed to Barks, because 4 years earlier he had made his first story with the same basic plot called U$11 The Great Steamboat Race.

  WDCS228 'River Rescue' - 1959

Synopsis:
Donald and the nephews get lost on a South American river. Who will rescue who?

Comments:
The Ducks accidentally fall into the river in a fictional location called Cascada el Grande in the Ecuadorian mountain range. Rivers in the Andes are known for their changing waters and deep canyons, and they float either to the west to end up into the Pacific Ocean, or to the east where they reach the jungles - just as the Ducks did.

  U$31 Fishy Warden - 1960

Synopsis:
Thieves are stealing the salmon in the Duckburg River. Gyro disguises himself as a fish in the hope that he can find and expose them...

Comments:
The geography of Duckburg has always been a mystery, because Barks insisted on changing the locations as he saw fit. In this story it has a river which floats into the sea south of the town.

  U$37 Deep Down Doings - 1962

Synopsis:
Scrooge finds a chest of pearls beneath the sea but he is discovered by The Beagle Boys. He then tries to smuggle the pearls past the villains by attaching them to a school of salmon...

Comments:
Duckburg River again!!! And if this is not enough, the story is, once again, about salmons returning to their childhood habitat upstream! The initial reason for Barks' interest may have been that his daughter Peggy's husband worked at a salmon hatchery. Already in 1956 Barks made the story WDCS192 'The King Fisher' based on casual observations of the salmons at the site. In the story Donald claims to be a fish culture expert.

  WDCS260 Merry Ferry - 1962

Synopsis:
Donald runs a small ferry route with just a few daily customers. One day the route is besieged by new customers, but the regular ones have priority...

Comments:
This is quite an extraordinary story, when you come to think about it. The basic plot is that of Donald sailing a few customers (including Bossy the cow) across the river on his small ferry between Sandflea Point and Mudhen Island. Barks merely describes Donald's relaxed day doing ordinary work, there is no exaggerated or violent action - in fact, everything run its smooth course apart from a brief interlude with some cables. After that all is back to normal. Good Morning, Bossy...
