Carl Barks invented Scrooge McDuck in 1947 to be a trigger of events for the adventure story in FC0178 Christmas on Bear Mountain. The story needed a rich uncle for the Duck family, and Barks invented a dark and wicked character that he did not plan on using again. But Barks was not at all finished with his new character! He quickly realized the character's enormous potential, so he mellowed Scrooge's attitude to some degree, but the most easily recognizable changes were the alterations in outfit and appearance. This did not happen overnight; in fact the operation lasted until 1950 before Barks had settled on a specific look for Scrooge.
During the 9 'evolution' stories Barks experimented with Scrooge's
graphic looks, and
below you are presented to examples from each of the affected stories in
chronological order.
The
number of panels shown for each story only indicate differences within the
story.
You shall have to look closely (and preferably have access
to the stories at hand) as some of the differences
are rather subtle.
Examples: The top hat size, the coat (in one story the
well known single button 'travels' around on the front!), in another story Scrooge is
not wearing spats (and he flaunts prolonged whiskers). The glasses are a chapter
in themselves;
But eventually Barks settled on today's Scrooge as first presented in A Christmas for Shacktown from 1952.
