He was a
humble man. Obviously he was world renowned, but
he never talked about it. No great ego that
needed to be fed, not boastful and very dignified.
He was a classy guy and very stylish. |

His stories fascinated me
right from my childhood. Apart from his
outstanding dramaturgy his stories are imbued
with a caricature of reality, that makes them
more interesting than they already are. |

Let us celebrate the
undeniable fact that we are the lucky ones - far
luckier than Gladstone Gander could ever
understand - for we have been allowed to share
the same time on earth with this great man; we
have lived in his time; and we can say, "He
walked among us, and, for a while, we walked with
him." |

Working with Carl was a
pleasure. He was always gracious and seemed to
have confidence in my ability. But for all of
that, he was still the 'Good Artist' of my
childhood: an artist whose work I'd grown up with.
So in a way, working with this man was a bit like
working with a living monument. |

It is always
amazing to me how Carl, mostly self-taught,
became such a genius in art and story telling. |

It was my great good fortune to grow
up with Carl Barks's stories as my constant

I'll remember a certain
little elated laugh he had ... a laugh I can
still hear but could never adequately describe.
It was a laugh of innocent delight - on the low
end, the honest, unfeigned giggle of someone who
has just heard or seen something wonderful. On
the high end, it was an unrestrained, knee-slapper
of a laugh, utterly free of self-consciousness or
affectation... |

I've always considered it a
tragedy that Carl was much more famous in Europe
than he is in on this continent. And when I say
famous...I mean REALLY famous. When Carl went to
Europe a few years ago he was reportedly mobbed
by fans and reporters as if he were a rock star.
He was greeted by presidents and royalty. When he
died (at age 99) his obituary was front-page news
in many European cities. Here his death made the
wire services, but it was far from big news. Most
people in this country still don't know who Carl
Barks was. |

Over the years, The Walt
Disney Studios has been home to some truly
incredible talents from the world of art and
entertainment. By any standard, Carl Barks, the
'Comic Book King,' has earned his place at the
top of that list. His contributions to the art
form are legendary and he has influenced and
entertained many generations with his inventive
stories and unique artistic style. He has
delighted and amazed legions of fans the world
over by transporting them to the most exotic
locales from mysterious jungles to outer space
and he has challenged our imaginations as few
have done before or since. Carl Barks has been an
important part of my life for as long as I can
remember. |

He never wanted to be a

kept it hush-hush... |

My greatest source of
enjoyment in Carl Barks' comics is in the
imagination of his stories. They're so full of
crazy ideas - unique and special...
I think the reason his stories have endured and
have had such international appeal is primarily
their strength as GOOD stories. |

In the
afternoon we had a meeting with fans. I was
worrying about Barks because of the heat, the
crowds, and the photographers, but what did he
do? He autographed endlessly, cracked jokes, gave
interviews, smiled and waved, and felt like a
fish in the water. I was flabbergasted. He
couldn't be anywhere near 93... |

As a storyteller he stands

He wrote and
drew his own material, which is incredibly rare.
But aside from that, he's the sort of person who,
no matter what his job was, he did it to the best
of his ability. He didn't worry about who was
reading it, or if it didn't get respect. It was
his job and he was going to do the best job he
could at it. |
