Carl Barks did not make many comic book stories in which valleys were the central locations, but a few did emerge from his pen. Most of them are presented here in chronological order.

  FC0147 Volcano Valley - 1947

Synopsis:
Donald buys an airplane by mistake but he manages to find a foreign buyer, who invites him back to his own homeland. But getting back again is not that easy...

Comments:
If ever a valley has deserved to be named Volcano Valley - it is this one! The whole area is totally surrounded by countless very active and fiery volcanoes!!! No wonder the Ducks have difficulty finding their way home. As it turns out the only way to escape is by firing up Old Ferocio - the valley's dominant, and dormant, volcano...

  MOC20 Darkest Africa - 1948

Synopsis:
Donald is a butterfly hunter and he is hired to go to Africa and collect the world's rarest butterfly. He finds it in the elephants' valley...

Comments:
The Ducks arrive at their destination, the Whambesi River, from where they are carried off by an elephant(!), which brings them to a small valley filled to the brim with other elephants(!!). In order to get free passage out they make all the elephants stampede(!!!)...

  FC0199 Sheriff of Bullet Valley - 1948

Synopsis:
Donald takes the nephews on a holiday trip to the formerly oh-so Wild West where he volunteers to catch some cattle rustlers. He claims to be an expert...

Comments:
Donald is assigned as deputy (despite the story's title he is never a sheriff) in the Bullet Valley area, which contains vast badlands, mesas, and gorges - as well as several cattle ranches. He has his work cut out for himself patrolling the entire valley.

  FC0223 Lost in the Andes - 1949

Synopsis:
By accident, janitor Donald at The Duckburg Museum discovers that a square rock from Peru in fact is an egg. He travels to Plain Awful in Aig Valley...

Comments:
We probably all recall that the Ducks end up in the square town of Plain Awful, but it probably escapes most of us that the town is situated in Aig Valley! So, when the Ducks glare down from the mountain tops in this panel they are, in fact, looking down over Aig Valley.

  WDCS105 'Echo Valley' - 1949

Synopsis:
Donald figures out that his nephews are responsible for the dubious echoes in Thrushwhistle Glen and he decides to put them to the test...

Comments:
This story is exceptional insofar that it features not one but two valleys, and the actions are equally divided between the two! In the first part the nephews make fake echoes in Thrushwhistle Glen, whereupon they move over to Red Ant Hollow to harass Donald in front of an audience.
Remark: Maybe the valleys are, in fact, one great valley in strict geological terms, because we are told that they are only divided by a creek.

  WDCS137 'Avalanche Valley' - 1951

Synopsis:
Donald has earned a tidy sum from his song 'The Screaming Cowboy' and he plays it constantly at the jukebox in the valley resort hotel. With catastrophic results!

Comments:
The ducks stay in a place called Avalanche Valley, and this is no joke; we witness how towering, steep and snowcapped mountains surround the valley. In short, the place is a disaster waiting to happen! And Donald is the catalyst who brings down the avalanches by insisting to play his music loudly at the jukebox...

  WDCS146 'Pleasant Valley' - 1952

Synopsis:
Donald and the nephews become chicken farmers on a hilltop above Pleasant Valley but it is not that easy to earn a living.

Comments:
Donald has on several occasions got the inhabitants of different towns in uproar for many reasons (just think of how he destroyed Duckburg's water supply in WDCS201 'A Dyeing Problem'), but in this story he tops himself; not only does he drown the entire city of Pleasant Valley in eggs, but the townspeople also feel compelled to burn it down and rename it Omelet...

  DD54 Forbidden Valley - 1957

Synopsis:
Donald and the nephews travel into the jungle to find Razor Wasps which can destroy the Pickle Haters that threaten the pickle harvest in Duckburg...

Comments:
In their search the Ducks travel up the Rio Fever in the upper Amazon area of South America, until they finally wind up in Forbidden Valley - a spot that time forgot. In the valley roam numerous species of prehistoric dinosaurs - and they are all afraid of the tiny, buzzing razor wasps...

  U$30 Pipeline to Danger - 1960

Synopsis:
Scrooge wants to store vast amounts of oil in an old volcano crater that will serve as a giant oil tank. But the crater is inhabited by pygmy Arabians who perceive it as their valley...

Comments:
...and this is the reason why this story is included in this page. It was not the first time Barks made a story which took place in or nearby an old volcano crater; in FC0318 No Such Varmint we experience the sole inhabitant of such a location - a giant sea serpent!

  U$36 Money Bag Goat - 1962

Synopsis:
Scrooge has been given a goat with some strange eating habits. It only eats dollar bills. He flies the goat to a valley in order to force it to turn to grass instead!

Comments:
Barks' last story featuring a valley as a main location was this 6-pager, which, for some unknown reason, has always had a tendency to be overlooked. Still, it has a novel plot and a surprising ending.
