THE LAST PHOTOS

In 1995 Barks returned to his homestead for the first time since he had left it in 1918. He was accompanied by a good friend who videotaped, while Barks photographed. There can be little doubt that Barks was surprised to learn how little the exterior of the house and its surroundings had changed; even a shack from his childhood remained - barely! When Barks first visited the homestead he just looked at it from a distance at the highway, but next time he was invited to have a look around. The two events are rendered below using a small selection of photos.

Here Barks got the first glimpse of his childhood home. He noticed the seemingly few changes apart from the, then, puny poplars that had grown to giant size in the intermediate decades.

When Barks visited the second time at close range he noticed some major alterations; a new dirt road led to the farm and the main entrance was now moved to the back of the house. But the telephone line was still in place...
