It may seem a little confusing, but Carl Barks actually lived in 4 different residences during his first tender years. Although his parents were by nature farmers, they sometimes had to move around in order to overcome hard times brought about by draught or to take advantage of alleged better job opportunities. Young Carl was born in a homestead in Merrill, Klamath County, Oregon, in 1901. The farmhouse was a simple two-room shack with a stove and a table in one room, and a bed in the other. However, in 1903 the family house was enlarged and had 4 bedrooms. The family then moved to a bigger farm with a two-storey house. Young Carl lived there until 1918, but the family made two 'detours' during the period - they settled on a small spread in nearby Midland and they moved briefly to nearby Santa Rosa, Sonoma County, California.

The most often depicted home is the two-storey house, of which Barks often spoke in interviews. It is also the main topic of the sub-pages. All images are direct copies of the original photos.
