SECOND INQUIRY

It was only natural that Western was also interested in obtaining model sheets of their star duck character Donald Duck, made by their star duck artist Carl Barks, so he was again approached to make one. The inquiry came from Westerns' art director Thomas J. McKimson.

In his letter McKimson refers to a specific model sheet that is rendered here. The sheet had been used for years at the time; several of the examples were lifted from the animated cartoons, and Barks' former colleague, cartoon director Jack King, had approved it. So it was high time to get a new instruction sheet, and Barks was the natural choice for the job, as his version of Donald was already highly successful.

Barks delivered two model sheets! Undoubtedly, he must have felt that his duck was so multifaceted that this was a minimum, and you can clearly see how much general information and how many detailed expressions Barks was able to cram into the sheets.

The payment for both model sheets followed promptly as seen on this pay slip, which also incorporates Barks' newest 10-pager. He later added a few explanatory comments in pencil.
