EXPLORATION

  FC0223 Lost in the Andes - 1949

Synopsis:
By accident, janitor Donald at the Duckburg Museum discovers that a square rock in fact is an egg. He travels to Plain Awful in Aig Valley...

Comments:
We probably all recall that the Ducks end up in the square town of Plain Awful, but it probably escapes most of us that the town is situated in Aig Valley! So, when the Ducks glare down from the mountain tops in this panel they are, in fact, looking down over Aig Valley - an elusive and uncharted spot deep inside Peru.
In U$26 The Prize of Pizarro the Ducks and Scrooge also visited Peru only to find yet another elusive and uncharted spot - an ancient Incan valley...

  FC0275 Ancient Persia - 1950

Synopsis:
A professor discovers how the ancient Persians immortalized themselves and he 'persuades' Donald to go with him to Persia to try out the invention.

Comments:
Normally, explorers venture out of their own free will, but in this story the Ducks are abducted and forced to join an expedition to Iran (the former Persia)! Not only do they find ancient palace ruins in the desert sand, they also find the original inhabitants - alive...

  FC0422 The Gilded Man - 1952

Synopsis:
Donald travels to British Guiana in order to trace down a valuable stamp and he finds it on an undelivered letter. But it has to be delivered first...

Comments:
When the ducks set out on an expedition with a specific goal in mind they would sometimes come across unsuspected beings. In this story Barks placed his ducks in British Guiana where they meet El Dorado, the legendary figure of a gilded man and the leader of the Chibcha Indians. And in U$14 The Lost Crown of Genghis Khan Scrooge and the Ducks are off to regain a precious gold crown, only to find it stored away in the cave of Gu, the abominable snowman.

  U$06 'Tralla La' - 1954

Synopsis:
Scrooge is stressed and after having reached his breaking point he travels with Donald and the nephews to Tralla La where the concept of money is unknown. Until they arrive...

Comments:
In this story Scrooge's intention is merely to settle down in a peaceful and tranquil place far from everyday routines and troubles. This was also the case in U$18 Land of the Pygmy Indians. But, of course, he never ended up finding what he wanted...

  U$11 Riches, Riches Everywhere! - 1955

Synopsis:
Scrooge takes a bet with Donald that he can find gold anywhere on the globe. They wind up in the Australian desert...

Comments:
Scrooge is challenged on both his skillfullness and pride, and he comes through with flying colours! He not only finds gold but he also finds (chronologically)
lead, silver, uranium, copper, diamonds, platinum, nickel, tin, aluminum (aluminium in British English), and oil. But the most needed - and at the time most precious - item escapes him namely simple drinking water...

  U$16 Back to Long Ago! - 1956

Synopsis:
Scrooge is hypnotized and learns that in a former life he was a Spanish captain who hid a treasure chest. He rushes off to find it...

Comments:
This is a strange expedition indeed, as it takes the skills of a hypnotist to make Scrooge aware of his deeds three centuries ago. And if this is not enough Donald 'relives' the very same story when hypnotized by another hypnotist at the same time. What are the odds??? Furthermore, they both rush independently to a specific Caribbean island in order to claim the same treasure...

  DD54 Forbidden Valley - 1957

Synopsis:
Donald and the nephews travel into the jungle to find Razor Wasps which can destroy the Pickle Haters that threaten the pickle harvest in Duckburg...

Comments:
In their search the Ducks travel up the Rio Fever in the upper Amazon area of South America, until they finally wind up in Forbidden Valley - a spot that time forgot. In the valley roam numerous species of prehistoric dinosaurs - and they are all afraid of the tiny, buzzing razor wasps...

  WDCS226 'The Drifting Island' - 1959

Synopsis:
Scrooge claims a previously uncharted island. He might make a profit, if only the island would stop moving and changing...

Comments:
The story opens with Donald proclaiming that a special show is taking place on TV tonight. It will be an orbiting satellite's view of the entire Earth. The prospects of this show seem so interesting to Donald that he hurries to Scrooge and forces him to come over and watch the program. Scrooge is utterly uninterested in the satellite's pictures, until he catches a glimpse of a tiny island, which he has never seen before! He rushes off and buys the island, which turns out to be drifting causing it to slowly self-destruct. In the end Scrooge winds up with a piece of land the size of a barrel...

  WDCS246 Lost Frontier - 1961

Synopsis:
Donald takes the nephews to the Grand Canyon to prove to them that cavemen don't exist. He will soon be much wiser...

Comments:
Surprisingly, the ducks have several times explored their own country and found ethnic groups or places that were unknown to the surroundings. In this story Donald is in for an unpleasant experience when he is actually caught by the 'non-existent' cavemen. One might think that he would have been much the wiser as the very same thing happened to him in WDCS058 'Canyon Cavemen', but this was obviously not the case!
Other examples: In FC0062 Mystery of the Swamp the Ducks encountered the G-gnome tribe, and in U$07 'Cibola' they found 7 fabled cities.

  U$55 McDuck of Arabia - 1965

Synopsis:
Sheik Arrabi talks Scrooge into financing an expedition to find the Queen of Sheba's lost mine in the Arabian desert. But the villain Hassan ben Jaild is on their heels!

Comments:
The ducks often travelled to unknown parts of Africa in order to find important objects or fabulous treasures. In this story the target was a fabled mine. Other examples: FC0291 The Magic Hourglass (special sand), MOC20 Darkest Africa (a rare butterfly), and U$19 The Mines of King Solomon (gold mines).
