OCEAN

FC0009 Donald Duck Finds Pirate Gold - 1942

Synopsis:
The parrot Yellow Beak is hiding from Black Pete in Donald's seashore tavern. Out of gratitude he shows the way to an old buried treasure.

Comments:
Barks was always fascinated by the ocean and its powerful waves, and he made multiple stories so he could draw just that. The first attempt was this joint venture drawn with colleague Jack Hannah. In it the Ducks travel to a mysterious treasure island in the Caribbean.

MOC41 Race to the South Seas - 1949

Synopsis:
Donald and Gladstone are each given a yacht from Scrooge who apparently has been marooned on an island. They both try to be the first to rescue him...

Comments:
They cross the South Seas in an attempt to find their uncle, but, as it turns out, he is not at all interested in getting rescued. During the race Donald gives ample proof of his non-existing skills as a sea captain...

  FC0495 'The Horseradish Story' - 1953

Synopsis:
Chisel McSue presents Scrooge with a valid paper that enables him to obtain all Scrooge's wealth. It can be avoided, though, if Scrooge can find a certain item deep down at the ocean floor...

Comments:
It is quite simple: Scrooge stands to lose his entire fortune, if he cannot produce a certain case of horseradish lost in a ship at the bottom of the ocean! Barks paid a sort of tribute to his brother Clyde by choosing horseradish as the treasure element. Clyde lived in
Tulelake, California, which was known as the Horseradish Capital of the World.

  U$05 'Atlantis' - 1954

Synopsis:
Scrooge buys all the 1916 quarters in the world just to chuck them into the ocean. Except for one. It will be worth a fortune...

Comments:
It is rather odd that the miserly and exceptionally careful Scrooge has lost money to the oceans as often as he did! In this story he desperately seeks to retrieve his quarters (and happens to discover the sunken Atlantis at the same time!!!). Barks drew his story at a time when the myth and the whereabouts of Atlantis was - once again - being debated and he decided to venture his version of the elusive place which he placed in the Atlantic Ocean.

  U$08 'The Stone-ray Machine' - 1954

Synopsis:
The nephews find an S.O.S. message - someone on an unknown island seeks help. Scrooge, along with his nephews, quickly take off in the hope of earning a bundle on the rescue expedition...

Comments:
This time the ducks have to find an uncharted island in order to rescue a marooned sailor (who turns out to be one of more Beagle Boys). Surprisingly, the thug had been able to make out and print the exact coordinates for the island!

  WDCS172 'Christmas in the Deep' - 1955

Synopsis:
Scrooge forces Donald and the nephews on a trip in his submarine to find a sunken treasure. On Christmas Eve! That is most unbearable for the nephews...

Comments:
Barks made this ocean story without showing more than a few panels of ocean! The story simply takes place near the ocean floor inside the submarine...

  WDCS177 'Deep Trouble' - 1955

Synopsis:
Vacation at last! The nephews want to go to the mountains but Donald longs for the beach. A trip inside a diving sphere in the middle of the ocean makes him change his mind.

Comments:
The Ducks have been drawn to the ocean on many occasions in some adventurous action. In this story the - at first - reluctant Donald let himself plummet to the ocean floor.

  U$25 The Flying Dutchman - 1959

Synopsis:
Scrooge goes hunting in the Atlantic Ocean for a mysterious gold-laden ship which sails without a crew. Donald tags along with his fishing rod...

Comments:
Barks used a well-known myth when he made this story. Through time many authors have written about the so called Flying Dutchman, the ship that was cursed to sail the high seas forever, because its Dutch captain had made a blasphemous remark. And Barks gladly joined the party. The ghost in this story winds up being the ship more than the ship's captain, though, and Scrooge fearlessly leads Donald in the hunt.

  U$46 Lost Beneath the Sea - 1963

Synopsis:
When Scrooge's lucky dime ends up at the bottom of the ocean, he, Donald and the nephews go after it. They find a strange shipyard on the ocean floor...

Comments:
Martian aliens are 'stranded' there in search for the most precious metal on their planet - iron. They melt down shipwrecks in order to accumulate more iron, but even this is not enough to fill the Martians' demands. Scrooge benevolently helps them find all the iron they want in the Earth's core, and is rewarded by a pile of 'useless' junk from the shipwrecks - gold...

U$68 Hall of the Mermaid Queen - 1967

Synopsis:
One day all the money from the Money Bin disappears through a hole into the ocean. The ducks encounter mermaids and mermen in their quest to recover it.

Comments:
In this story the ducks spend most of the time in the ocean looking for Scrooge's money. To accomplish this feat they are all equipped with a specially invented diving outfit which also supply them with oxygen.
This was the last time Scrooge temporarily lost his money to the ocean; it also happened in U$05 'Atlantis' and in U$46 Lost Beneath the Sea...
