1947-1949

1947

In April Western substituted their small white payslips for larger yellow ones enabling the company to add more information or more stories. The example shows the payslip for FC0178 Donald Duck's Christmas on Bear Mountain (see more HERE, section 4). On it Barks has written first story in which Uncle Scrooge appeared.

1948

All of Barks' stories were sketched and inked by himself as was the case with most of Western's other artists. But it was only a very few that also wrote their own stories. Typically the artists engaged in a kind of loose partnership with each other, but this was not Barks' style. Still, from time to time he received finished scripts that he 'only' had to turn into graphics, and the above payslip offers a small insight in such actions. Barks did not write WDCS099 'The Radio Quiz Show', but the story needed some attention, so he rewrote parts of it and cashed in 25 dollars for the trouble.

1949

Occasionally Barks accepted ideas from other people such as colleagues, friends, and even his own daughter Peggy (see more HERE). The adventure story in FC0263 Trail of the Unicorn is an example where a friend, Dana L. Coty, was paid 30 dollars for the main idea. Coty helped Barks on more occasions, and Barks usually sent him a note of acknowledgement and a cheque that was normally 25 dollars for a 10-pager. A receipt, often from Coty's wife Mary, was then passed on to Barks for his files.
