PRELIMINARY PAINTING

FINISHED PAINTING

AFOUL OF THE FLYING DUTCHMAN

Year of issue: 1985
Barks' own numbering system: 130
Lithograph number: 7
Number of ordinary lithographs: 345
Original painting size: 760x635millimeters

Comments: Not only is the surviving preliminary for this painting the roughest of the preliminaries in these sub-pages, but it is also the one that came closest to the end product. Barks allowed himself relatively few pose and object changes between the two pictures.
The basic idea derives from U$25 The Flying Dutchman from 1959. In 1972, during his first permission period, Barks made three paintings with the same main theme, but only two of them were sold.
