NORTH AMERICA

ARCTICA
  FG 1948 Toyland - 1948

Synopsis:
Donald and the nephews are invited by Santa himself to come and test his toys. They waste no time...

Comments:
In American culture Santa Claus lives close to the North Pole. In other cultures he lives in a variety of places; for instance, Danish children believe he lives in Greenland, a former Danish dominion.

ARCTIC OCEAN
  FC0256 Luck of the North - 1949

Synopsis:
Donald gets tired of Gladstone's never-ending luck so he sends him up north with a fake treasure map. But Donald's bad conscience will not let him alone...

Comments:
In the Nordic (Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland) publications of the story it was decided to have it unfold in Greenland instead of north of Alaska! Although Greenland was a full part of the Danish realm at the time it does not explain this strange decision. It also meant that some of the panels had to be redrawn as no firs grow in Greenland...

ALASKA
  FC0456 Back to the Klondike - 1953

Synopsis:
Scrooge is having trouble with his bad memory but after a visit to the doctor he recalls a huge gold deposit he once left behind in Alaska.

Comments:
This is one of Barks' favourite locations outside the USA. Other stories: FC0062 Frozen Gold, FC0256 Luck of the North, U$19 The Mines of King Solomon, U$35 The Golden Nugget Boat, U$59 North of the Yukon.

CANADA
U$18 Land of the Pygmy Indians - 1957

Synopsis:
Scrooge longs for some peace and quiet so he buys a large, remote area to enjoy its tranquillity. But the land is inhabited...

Comments:
Yet another of Barks' favourite locations - in this case pinpointed to be north of Lake Superior. Other stories: CP9 Christmas in Duckburg, FC0263 Land of the Totempoles (British Columbia), FC0408 The Golden Helmet (Labrador), U$23 The Strange Shipwrecks, WDCS049 'Tight Wire Artist' (Niagara Falls, Canadian side), WDCS230 Black Wednesday.

NORTHERN SEAS
  WDCS247 The Madcap Mariner - 1961

Synopsis:
Donald is captain on Scrooge's schooner in a race to win a prize for the biggest fish. And Scrooge has a secret device on board!

Comments:
The ducks must be far up north, because they see - and ram - icebergs, and at one time they are even 'stranded' on a large ridge of ice.

NORTH ATLANTIC OCEAN
  U$05 'The Atlantis Story' - 1954

Synopsis:
Scrooge buys all the 1916 quarters in the world just to chuck them into the ocean. Except for one. It will be worth a fortune...

Comments:
In this story Barks used his artistic freedom to place the fabled and sunken island of Atlantis here. In U$25 The Flying Dutchman the ducks cruise back and forth between the North and the South Atlantic Ocean.

MEXICO
  FC0147 Volcano Valley - 1947

Synopsis:
Donald buys an airplane by mistake but he manages to find a foreign buyer who invites him back to his own homeland. But getting back again is not that easy...

Comments:
The ducks wind up in the fictive state of Volcanovia. Other stories: FC1161 The Training Farm Fuss, U$44 Crown of the Mayas (Yucatán), WDCS053 'The Freighter Story' (Acapulco), WDCS197 'Border Patrolman', WDCS212 'Rocket Race' (Yucatán).

CARIBBEAN OCEAN
  U$16 Back to Long Ago - 1957

Synopsis:
Scrooge is hypnotized and learns that in a former life he was a Spanish captain who hid a treasure chest. He rushes off to find it...

Comments:
The ducks' actions take place on an uncharted island near Trinidad. Other stories: FC0009 Pirate Gold (Treasure Island), FC0495 'The Horseradish Story' (Cuba, Jamaica, and near Jamaica).
