CINEMAS

MOC04

FC0263

Even the smaller towns have at least one cinema and Duckburg has a few as well. We even got to know what was playing: Dr. Krankenstein (U$26 Krankenstein Gyro), Bullet Pizen at Rustlers' Gallows (MOC04 Peaceful Hills), and Lost Mines of the Old West (DD52 The Lost Peg Leg Mine). Furthermore, Donald was once a box office assistant in a cinema playing Coyote Trail in a 1-pager (FC0263 'Matinee Doorman').

AUCTIONS

FC0108

FC0256

It is not always possible to judge if the plentiful auctions held in Duckburg are performed by the city or by private companies. Here are examples of objects the ducks have bought from auctions: Houseboat (FC0108 The Terror of the River), Trunk (FC0256 Luck of the North), Bombastium (U$17 A Cold Bargain), Parrot (U$39 Getting the Bird), Lunch box (WDCS250 Boxed-In).

HOSPITALS

WDCS178

U$27

Hospitals are surely needed in Duckburg - especially for Donald and Scrooge, who seem to go in and out of them at a regular pace! Donald is the most accident-prone, but we rarely get to follow him into emergency rooms or recovery rooms. Here is a selection of examples from the two ducks' medical journals:
Donald: Blow to the head (WDCS032 'The Lucky Rabbit's Foot'), Major bruises (WDCS142 'Houseboat Vacation'), Beestings (WDCS158 Beestings), Alpenhorn blast (
WDCS178 'Neighbour Trouble'), Wheelchair-ridden (WDCS262 Way Out Yonder), Fist fight (WDCS271 A Stone's Throw From Ghost Town).
Scrooge: Stress (U$06 'Tralla La'), Nervous breakdown (
U$22 The Golden River), Broken leg (U$27 Crawls for Cash).
Furthermore, Barks drew a whole scene in which Donald was visiting a hospital teeming with nurses in order to sell taffy, but the panels were never published in the story (WDCS175 'The Taffy Pull')...

SCIENCE HALLS

U$28

WDCS221

With an ingenious inventor such as Gyro amongst the Duckburgians it is only natural that the city has a few official places to match. Gyro himself successfully visits the Inventors' Hall where he is crowned Champion Inventor of the World (U$28 The Inventors' Contest), Donald takes an IQ test in the Science Hall (WDCS275 Zero Hero), and Daisy and Donald admire the new Science Hall for the Junior Woodchucks of the World (WDCS221 'The Secret Mine').

EDUCATION

WDCS100

WDCS169

Although the overall subject must be interesting to Barks' young readers, he did not make that many stories on, in this case, schools. In fact, nearly all of them described how the nephews played hooky from school, so the buildings or classrooms were hardly ever seen! Here are some examples of various education facilities in Duckburg: The nephews attend kindergarten(!) (WDCS235 Want to Buy an Island?), the nephews are herded back to school (WDCS100 'Truant Officer Donald'), Donald joins the nephews for a lesson in their classroom (WDCS169 'Houseboat Hooky'), Donald and Gladstone attend acting school (WDCS128 'Knight Brawl'), Scrooge attend ballet school (U$04 'Ballet Diploma').
